This week, we explored the World Trade Organization, which is fundamental to the post-Cold-War liberal world order. As we’ve discussed all semester, the great powers seem to be reconsidering that end-of-history (refer to Fukuyama), Washington-Consensus liberal world order, and, perhaps, even returning to a more zero-sum realist posture. Just when we were perhaps starting to make sense of all of that, a global pandemic struck (I’m in danger of making light here, but you really can’t make this stuff up).

Given all of that, let’s wrap up our series of discussions with this question: what do you think the post-coronavirus-pandemic international system will look like in terms of free, globalized trade and the WTO? None of us, of course, know the answer to that question, but I feel like informed speculation about it is a good way to both wrap up the semester and think about the WTO. So, as always, feel free to think out loud (in an ordered, clearly articulated way, of course), and remember that no one knows the answer to this question, but it’s definitely worth thinking about!
