Position Essay

You will develop their own essay question over the course module (sociology work). You need to choose any topic about work – past, present or future – but it MUST be rooted in a sociology of work perspective broadly interpreted. Essays can draw on autobiographical experience and reflection, on images or fictional material. Students taking the module are encouraged to be imaginative and to take risks with the assessment. No subheading is needed.

The theme of the essay is to discuss how the development of internet industry has changed the forms of work. (mainly talks about gig-economy) You may write how did internet and technology produce a variety of new economic forms, such as gig-economy. How gig-economy changed the tradition forms of employment, production, consumption or any other activities, and triggered new changes in labour relations. In a good way or bad way? You may also discuss why the gig-economy developed so well? the issues or struggles of gig work? Any relevant laws and policies? any real experience?
