Purpose of the Assignment
For this assignment, you will provide the a general summary and evaluation of The Swerve: How the World Became Modern, Stephen Greenblatt’s controversial, award-winning history of the transmission of Lucretius’s philosophical poem De Rerum Naturum (On the Nature of Things), its rediscovery in the early Renaissance, and how its ideas helped direct the course of Western Civilization.
The Swerve is an excellent example of the New Historicism, a interdisciplinary approach to studying the relationships between literary texts and historical circumstances. The book won both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize, but it is not without its detractors. This preliminary book review is the first part of your engagement with this book in the course. It will give you an opportunity to experience someone “practicing” or “doing” history.
The purpose of the preliminary book report is to provide you with an opportunity to demonstrate a basic comprehension of the assigned text, including its main thesis or conclusion, the main ideas that the text develops in support of its thesis, and the historical evidence or arguments that the author uses to support these ideas. As you will see, a work of historical analysis has the basic essay structure that you have learned in ENGL 1001 or any other composition course; the primary differences, of course, are length and the quantity and quality of information.

College-level writing and paragraph organization
Your introductory paragraph should provide the general information about the book such as the author’s name, the publisher, the year of publication, the general scope of the book. The introduction should conclude with the main idea of the entire work.
The introduction will then be followed but a summary of each chapter. Each summary should occupy a separate paragraph. The paragraphs should each have the following structure:
A topic sentence that contains the main idea(s) or point(s) of the chapter
The primary argument(s) or narrative that supports the main idea(s)
Key historical facts or details used by the author as his support
The concluding paragraphs should provide the reader with an overall impression of the book’s quality. Was it effective? Was it easy (or difficult) to understand? Did the author put forth a successful argument? You may consider these questions or others. The point of the conclusion is to make a judgement about the book.
A Few Dos and Don’ts
Do not use first person (I, me, my, we, us, our) or second person (you, your). Academic book reviews, like all academic work, must be presented in an objective voice that does not references the writer, even if the writer is giving an opinion.
Do not use slang or other non-processional language.
Do not make false claims.
This is history assignment: get your dates right.
Do use correct, standard, college-level grammar, mechanics, and organization.
Do ask the instructor if you have any questions about this assignment.
