Title: Portrayal of mental illness media reports of crime and it’s influence on perceptions of mental illness.

Hypotheses:

Hypothesis 1a: Attitudes towards a perpetrator of a crime will be more negative if the perpetrator is described as having a mental illness than a non-mental illness, or no illness.
Hypothesis 1b: Attitudes towards the perpetrator will be more negative if the perpetrator is described as having schizophrenia than depression, cancer or no illness.
Hypothesis 2a: Participants who have experienced mental illness, or know someone with a mental illness, will hold less negative attitudes towards mental illness.
Hypothesis 2b: Participants who have experienced mental illness, or know someone with a mental illness, will be more knowledgeable about mental illness
Hypothesis 2c: Participants who are more knowledgeable about mental illness will hold less negative attitudes towards mental illness.
