- POLS 111 FYRE Assignment: Research Paper Overview
The research paper must draw upon both literature and data about your case study (your two
selected federal electoral districts) to answer your research question. The research paper must
be written in the following structure, using clear headings for each section:
Research Paper Title
Author name
Abstract (100-150 words)
Introduction (50-100 words)
• Introduction to topic and why it matters
• Statement of research question
• Brief summary of research finding and argument to be advanced (evidence-based thesis
statement)
Literature Review (200-500 words)
• Using available literature (aim for 3-10 sources, favoring peer reviewed sources
published within the last ten years), summarize what is known about this topic. (You
may reuse text from your research proposal.)
Data and Analysis (150-250 words)
• Description of the selected federal electoral districts. (You may reuse information from
your research proposal but do NOT simply present the research proposal table).
• Description of data sources used for study. (Where relevant, include information on
dates, search terms, hashtags, etc.) Discussion of strengths and limitations of data
sources for answering the research question.
Discussion (250-500 words)
• Use data about your case study (your two selected federal electoral districts) to answer
the research question to the best of your abilities. (Note: the use of tables or graphics is
permitted).
• Identify areas for future research
Conclusion (50-100 words)
• Revisit research finding and argument that was advanced (evidence-based thesis
statement) in the introduction
Bibliography (no limit)
• Provide information on all work (literature, data sources, other) cited in the paper. Use
Chicago author-date format. Note that there must be an in-text citation for everything
that is listed in the bibliography.
