Business Ethics and Decision Making –
This activity requires you to complete three separate activities analyzing business ethics and decision making issues.
The first required activity involves a case from the Ethics of Management book using an assigned framework, evaluate a corporate decision for it’s moral standing.
The second required activity involves selecting publicly owned company in a similar industry or facing a similar challenge as the company in the case and applying the concepts of responsible business and the quintuple bottom line to company.
The third required activity is to summarize and analyze what you learned in the 1st two activities.
Step one –
In Ethics of Management, read the assigned chapter and case. Complete the HEF analysis determining 4 stakeholders for each major category:
Stakeholder groups that were harmed and how they were harmed,
Stakeholder groups that were benefited and how they were benefited,
Stakeholder groups that were denied rights, what those rights were and how their rights were denied,
Stakeholder groups that were able to exercise their rights and what those rights were,
Stakeholder groups that were economically damaged and how they were economically damaged,
Stakeholder groups that were economically benefited and how they were economically benefited,
Stakeholder groups that were legally impacted and what legal requirements applied to the situation.
You will need to read the text to help you with this. USE HEADINGS and BULLETS.
Then state:
Q1) the ethical dilemma (what they risk vrs what they gain) of the one of the primary decision makers, and
Q2) what you would do and why. (you disregard the class assignment questions in the book although you can use them for additional guidance).
Step Two –
Using the industry indicated in the assignment label, find a large publicly owned company in the same industry (use the CSUMB library resources. You must access independent data on the companies as well as their corporate website.
For the company, look at their website. Check sections like “about us”, ”values” “mission” and other headings where they might talk about their social responsibility initiatives. Click on the links about their history, what they are doing to be a responsible company and really get a feel for how are they addressing the quintuple bottom line (QBL) issues of:
Balancing personal, social and community needs (People)
Ethical behavior (Ethics)
Concern for issues of fairness (Equity)
Environmental stewardship (Planet) and
Business value-added (Profit).
Next, look at independent resources available through the CSUMB library to determine an outsider’s view of the company’s corporate social responsibility.
Step Three – You will summarize how the 2 companies (1 from Step One and 1 from Step Two) and the assigned are doing with Corporate Social Responsibility.
This section should be your own evaluation of
Q1) what they are doing well,
Q2) are they overall CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) focused,
Q3) are they a “green” company/industry,
Q4) can you respect their leaders,
Q5) what are a couple of things they need to address as a company/industry.
