Simple Prompt: Considering the intended/target audience, why is the argument posed in Inequality for All a strong/weak argument and why is it a(n) (un)persuasive argument?
Write a rhetorical analysis that focuses the discussion on three elements of argumentation: evidence, appeal, and rhetorical strategy. These author’s rhetorical choices (of selecting a dominant type of evidence, appeal, and strategy) can help or hurt his/her chances of persuading a target audience. Our job as critical thinkers is to judge and evaluate the author’s level of success in persuading that intended audience. When we compose our own arguments, we will constantly need to be aware of our rhetorical choices and the needs, wants, desires, beliefs, biases, and values system associated with our target audience.
The key to this analysis is to always keep in mind the specific intended audience of a text, to think about how that audience will perceive and react to the argument being presented in the text.
What you want to include:
An intro that includes a thesis.
At least three body paragraphs. A body paragraph for each of the three elements of argumentation we are considering in this discussion. Three or four examples are needed to prove/support your topic sentences.
A conclusion that considers the impact of the text’s purpose and/or the author’s intent.
Properly documented sources in the body of the composition and the Works Cited page.
Challenges (What you want to practice):
Paragraph structure (structural theory of intro, body, and conclusion paragraphs).
Attention to detail (the use of language, graphics/visuals, and soundtrack/sound effects in the film).
Empathetic Imagination (thinking about what the author and the audience are thinking)
Group communication (help your group members by sharing information and resources)
