School and SES Assignment

The intention of this assignment is to consider the significance of social class in college/university communities. This is very important because the financial stability of a college or university impacts the community in which it resides. You will investigate whether social class affects where students live and attend school, how social class shapes students’ achievement, educational attainment, and everyday school experiences; and what policies or reforms are being implemented in the attempt to reduce any disparities. What you learn will be placed in conversation with the readings and concepts presented in the course.
Goal 1:
Understand the significance of social class in local school communities; (pick a higher ed community/neighborhood/location in the state of Georgia, such as GGC, GSU, Spellman, Morehouse and consider the social class of the community, look into https://www.usg.edu/ this website list all the schools in ga, their cost and location.

https://www.usnews.com/education this website ranks schools based on host of categories for example Agnes Scott raised their tuition since they won an award for best freshman experience

Note there may be a great difference in the private and public colleges and universities. They tend to gross millions every year, shaping the greater community.

Here’s a few examples of what you can choose to research and discuss either the expansive of the schools in relation to the students and location or gentrification
some students choose to go to GGC because is very cheap in comparison to GA State or UGA you’d pay double for tuition! Also this impacts their community
It’s expensive to live in midtown/downtown Atlanta and go to Ga state at the same time, most students can’t afford it and struggle
Morehouse and spelman college is located in west atlanta that has a tremendous amount of gentrification. You research what impact this has on the students that go there. Overall the belt-line that’s running running through Atlanta is making its way to colleges which will impact the housing around the area because living on the belt is very expensive.

Assessment 1:
Conduct original research on social class in the local college of choice; synthesize what you learned about the community/location in a 1-page academic paper; locate at least one social problem in the community that is related to the school or student’s experiences note: the community around the school has its own socioeconomic status, that’s often in relation to the school.
You can use the book Schools and Society, my notes, and another peer reviewed scholarly article or source that you would have to find
Discuss the problems they have in terms of living coast and them attending the school, and the impact of the economy or community the school has on its students.
For example georgia gwinnett college students complain about transportation, they don’t have Marta and interning in Atlanta would be a detriment to them. In comparison to students in dekalb county who have access to Marta that gives them the ability to do a lot.

Goal 2:
Connect and apply sociological theory and research on social class to a local issue or problem identified for the chosen area
I will attach chapter 7 and 8 from the book Schools and Society that will support gentrification, these chapters include information on social inequality, class stratification, I will also attach a few chapters that involve money and class related issues, race and ethnicity; these chapters should help you understand the dynamics that exist in the school and the location you choose.
Assessment 2:
Locate the class related issues in the higher ed community you have picked, how are we best to address the problem based on what you have read and studied; synthesize material into a 2-3-page academic paper including references
For example, some school websites advertise childcare by doing this they’re supporting their students that are parents
Side note: after you identified the issue, then discuss what to do to resolve it.
Example
Georgia state is buying out downtown and pushing out the homeless, basically Georgia state is gentrifying downtown so this can be a benefit and disadvantage for students and neighborhoods surrounding the community.
Some students struggle because their college expensive and the community they live in, so we have to find out a solution for them

Side note for if you want to discuss Gentrification in the essay
The old fourth war is a low income neighborhood outside Gradi hospital which used to be low income housing but got torn down to become new homes worth half a million. All of the people who used to live in the low income houses got pushed out and relocated elsewhere. You can discuss the students impact, and the community along with a possible solution.
