Selves and Societies

Our remaining response papers may take several forms, but all boil down to a substantive engagement with one (or sometimes more) theoretical/critical arguments taken from the readings in the previous unit. The response should be roughly 1800 words/ 5 pages long, and follow the conventions of polished formal academic writing.
A Letter to a Theorist:

Address a letter to a theorist whose ideas you have engaged more deeply than average. In that letter, open a conversation with that writer that advances an argument that complicates, extends, or qualifies the ideas of the essay in question. In such an argument, you will want to lay out the theorist’s ideas as you understand them, before addressing your intervention into those ideas. When you do begin your intervention, you should consider how to blend both logical theory of your own with concrete examples that may illustrate your intervention.
