to explore topics from UNDERSTANDING HUMAN COMMUNICATION in more depth;
to teach other;
to use communication skills from the textbook as you work in a group;
to use communication skills in a presentation.
to explain to the class WHAT they can learn from your topic that is not already discussed in the textbook
to think outside of the “box” of information found in textbook and share new information and insights about your topic.
The paper must be well organized. I should be able to follow your line of reasoning and see how all parts of the paper work together to support your main point. Your paper should be a cohesive whole. It should not read like a glued together patchwork of unrelated paragraphs. The parts should work together.
I have included an example of an individual movie paper that includes the works cited page.You will be submitting an individual group paper on your section/portion of the group’s communication concept–Listening, Culture, Language etc.
Please remember to use 12 pt. font and double spacing throughout the paper. You will need to do research–in addition to using the textbook. This means being resourceful in finding current (prefer 2010 or newer) sources of information to support your ideas in your paper.
This paper will be graded separately from your presentation to the class. Be sure to read and follow all of the information in this document. NOTE: The first page of your paper follows MLA style of writing with one (1) inch margins from side-to-side and top to bottom. Also, your last name, and page number are located in upper right hand corner. Please save your document in either Word, rich text format, or Open Doc text format with your last name.
To get the most points out of this assignment, please make sure you follow each of the following requirements:
Please double space the entire paper including separate Works Cited page.
Your last page should be titled Works cited (this includes all SOURCES you used in preparing this paper such as magazines, interviews, newspapers, etc.).
Most of your sources should be either books, scholarly publications (where applicable), and as a last resort, some NEWSWEEK, U.S. WORLD, TIME or LIFE. You should count on at least one source (minimum) per page of your paper. Also, interviews are acceptable as well as government publications (where applicable), documentaries on television (where applicable). If you are in doubt, please do not hesitate and get clarification from me before your put the FINAL PAPER together. When in doubt, PLEASE ASK UNTIL YOU UNDERSTAND CLEARLY.
Use at least a minimum of three (3) research sources but no more than five (5). Look for the most current information dated 2010 or newer.
Your paper should be a MINIMUM of three (3) word-processed pages (that DOES NOT include the works cited page at the end of your paper) and a MAXIMUM of five (5) word-processed pages. You will points deducted if you fall below the MINIMUM or exceed the MAXIMUM. Only acceptable wordprocessed programs are Word, Open Document text (odt) or rich text format (rtf).
Start each typed or word-processed page of text with your last name in the upper right-hand corner about 1/2 inch from the top. Always start your text about one inch from the top of each page and end the text one inch before the bottom of the page. In other words, leave one-inch margins on the sides, bottom and top. This is known as the MLA style with one (1) inch margins
You will be graded on mechanics, grammar, central idea/thesis, main points, conclusion and topic presentation, sources; in other words, EVERYTHING MUST BE CORRECT to receive the best grade possible.
Please PROOFREAD very carefully to correct any misspelled words or incorrect grammar use.
A minimum of three (3) quotes are required throughout the paper not to exceed a maximum of five (5) quotes. LONG QUOTES tend to detract from your own analysis and thought of content. Therefore, START AND END QUOTES (whenever possible) with your own words. The usual rule is a maximum of two (2) quotes per every page of your paper.
Quotes are evidence of your work supporting your ideas/points and should be explained NOT just put in the paper.
You must include a Works Cited page (which is the last page with only your research sources) as part of your paper to show where your information came from. Without this page, I may think all the information is yours when it may not be. This is called “stealing another person’s work” without citing it as someone else’s work.
