Argument Response Outline and Important Requirements

1. This paper requires STRICT source accountability. Writers MUST use MLA standards to document sources in the body of the paper, including the introduction and conclusion. Significant points will be deducted if source acknowledgment is missing anywhere in the paper or has been documented incorrectly. Please consult if you are unsure. A Works Cited page MUST accompany the final draft.
2. This paper should be 4-5 pages in length, use no higher than 12 pt. font, be double-spaced, adhere to MLA standards for formatting and be written in Standard English.
3. The final draft MUST be submitted to the online paper submission no later than the cut off date and time . NO EXCEPTIONS. Failure to comply will result in a grade of zero for this assignment.

I. Introduction
a. Sharing background detail about the topic can be effective because it can lead to the writer’s stance. Explaining the entire history of the issue is not necessary but summarizing parts of its history such as how it began and how it has evolved overtime can effectively lead to the writer’s argument.

II. Body: Each paragraph MUST introduce reasoning that supports the main point (thesis) as well as offer supportive evidence that validates not only the point shared, but the writer’s perspective. *It is important to really give the sources a ‘voice’ in the paper. *See the MLA PowerPoint for tips.*
a. Introduce the supporting point (should come from thesis)
i. Introduce text (source) as a means of immediately backing up the point.
ii. Illustration (using evidence: quotes/indirect quotes from the text)
iii. Explanation – how does the illustration support the point?
b. Introduce the next supporting point
i. Repeat process
c. Introduce the next supporting idea (if there is one)
i. Repeat process

III. Conclusion
Here is an opportunity for the writer to offer a ‘closing’ reflection that shares the importance of the ideas presented in the body. For example, the writer may want to strongly state how any extended solution(s) shared can be of a benefit to the future, or emphasize the importance of how a call to action will benefit all concerned in the long run if the writer’s goal is to argue for change. What do you want your listeners to remember most of all, especially if you encourage them to act?
