After reading these chapters, choose a 19th-century map, drawing or photograph for each city that illustrates something described in the chapter. Links to online digital image collections are provided below. With each image, provide a caption that includes information about the online collection where you found it and any information about the author, specific location and date of the image. Images may show buildings, urban plans, street scenes, or individuals, the choices of photographs are part of crafting your essay. Make sure to reference the image in the paper and indicate why it is a good illustration for your text. To do this, write about the image within your text and describe the connections as part of the essay.
The images should be submitted with your paper and number 1-3 for easy reference in the paper. Please download or copy the image file into your word or pdf document on separate pages and add a caption with the image information. You will not get any additional points for formatting or design, so keep it simple! Since we will view the image on Canvas, the resolution can be as low as 150 dpi, but remember that if you scale your image up from its original size, the resolution will go down. A small image at 150 dpi will not look good if you try to scale it up to the size of the page.
Please find images from the following collections (if you want to use an image from another source, please get permission from Prof. Gleeson):

Write a 1000-word essay about the authors’ experiences visiting American cities around the time of the Civil War (about three double-spaced pages). This should be a single essay in paragraph form (no bullet points or lists). Address the following topics (not necessarily in this order):
All of the authors were from the United Kingdom. How did they react to the cities as foreigners? What architectural aspects of the cities impressed or disappointed them?
What did you learn from reading the chapters about people’s everyday lives in 19th-century American cities?
How do these chapters enhance your understanding of slavery, as well as racial and ethnic discrimination against immigrants in 19th-century American cities? Comment specifically on Lady Duffus Hardy’s experience in Chinatown in San Fransisco. Be cautious to read between the lines of her observations (don’t take everything these authors say as factual or objective).
How do your images illustrate observations in the texts?
Please use 11 pt. font, double-spaced text, and 1” margins.
CITATIONS: This is NOT a research paper. It is not recommended or expected that you consult additional sources. When quoting directly from the authors, please indicate their name and the page number of the quotation in parentheses at the end of the sentence, such as (Weld, 360). A works cited list or bibliography is not necessary.
