The History and Culture of the New Testament Era

Background Information
This activity will familiarize you with some of the basic history before and during the New Testament era. You will also learn about four cultural principles of the Hellenistic–Roman world that help to shed light on many passages in the New Testament.

Instructions

1. Read Chapters 6–8 and Chapter 12 in Jesus is Lord.

2. Watch the video lecture “The History and Culture of the Hellenistic–Roman World.” The lecture is presented in three sections. Please be sure to watch each and in the proper sequence. Review the lecture videos:

3. The video lecture will identify one passage for discussion for each of the cultural principles. Select one of the cultural principles and its associated passage to focus on in your initial post. Write a 150–200 word description of that passage in light of the cultural principle it is associated with and in light of one specific piece of historical information discussed in the lecture or in the reading from Jesus is Lord (be sure to cite the page number from the book).
