The Last Supper
Mid-term exam
Instructions: Answer the following Essay Question:
Write an essay about The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci (figure 16.6), discussing the following topics:
In the place where it was painted, what kind of room was it located in, and what symbolic value did this have when it was originally made? In other words, how does the imagery in the painting relate to the room in which it was painted, both spatially and conceptually?
What incident or story from the life of Jesus does it portray, and what action or actions are shown in the scene?
Describe the composition and the arrangement of figures in the image. Which of the characters (other than Jesus) does the book single out as being the most important, and what is the importance of each of them? What are they doing?
How does the imagery in the painting visually emphasize the fact that Jesus is the most important character? (Think about both the painting’s composition and other visual details.)
What new technique did Leonardo use to make this image, and what was the result? Did his experiment work? What kinds of damage has the painting suffered over the centuries since it was made?
What features of this image make it a good example of High Renaissance imagery? This question will require some thought, because the answers are not stated explicitly in the book. You will have to think about what the book has said about Renaissance art, including information that it presented in earlier chapters, and what I’ve said about Renaissance art in my lectures. Try to describe at least two aspects of the painting that answer this question. There are several things you could mention, including both visual and conceptual elements of the painting. (For example, is there classicism anywhere in the image? If so, where?)
Be sure to address each of the things I asked about, and include all of the relevant facts. (You can address them in any order you want, as long as you deal with everything I’ve asked about.) Include as much detail as you can; doing a thorough job will help you get a better grade.
I want you to present your answers as a text with paragraphs, not bullet points or sections. No sub-headings!!
(Turn to the Chapter 16 of the uploaded book) All of the factual information you need to answer these questions is in the uploaded Book, but you will also have to do a little thinking and analysis on your own. In some cases the information you need may be in two or more places in the book, or on two or more pages of a specific chapter. Some of the questions may also ask for you to state an opinion on a certain topic and then back it up with facts from the book. You shouldn’t do any additional research or use sources other than the textbook for this assignment.
When you prepare your answers, present the facts you found in the book in your own words as much as possible. If you decide to quote any text directly from the book, indicate this with quotation marks and a page citation (the page number in parentheses is fine; footnotes aren’t necessary in this case). Failure to do so will also count as plagiarism, and you’ll either get a lower grade or receive no points for that question, depending on how bad the plagiarism is. In any case, don’t use too many direct quotes; I want you to demonstrate your own understanding of the material by explaining it in your own words, so you should avoid just copying much from the book.

Cite the uploaded Book.pdf and please be sure to use APA citation style. Use less direct quotes and more paraphrased.
I also uploaded an APA_Requirement.pdf and you must refer to it and write 100% correct in-text citations and “References” Page. Failure to use correct citations will fail me in the essay since my professor was extremely picky.
