They Had Us at Hello
Let’s face it: sometimes it seems like Hollywood has run out of ideas. I mean, why is a movie like Fast and Furious 6 really necessary? Did F&F5 really leave that many unanswered questions? Most sequels are pale imitations of the originals. A few manage to be as good as their predecessors, and fewer still actually top them. Bad sequels fall into two categories.
In the first category we have films that are so beloved, so iconic and timeless that they can never be matched. Films in this category include The Blues Brothers, Ghostbusters, Back to the Future, Chinatown, Grease, Poltergeist, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Saturday Night Fever. In the second category we have movies that are, to be honest, pretty mediocre, so it’s really hard to believe they spawned any sequels. Movies in this second category include City Slickers, Sister Act, Legally Blonde, Caddyshack, Short Circuit, Home Alone, and Cocoon.
Believe or not, they even made a sequel to The Rocky Horror Picture Show, though which category that film belongs in is debatable. Critics pretty much universally agree that The Godfather is a masterpiece, Godfather II is passable, and Godfather III is an utter travesty.
Your job is to choose a sequel or a re-make to either defend or critique. You will need to give a synopsis of the original film, place it in category one or two, and explain its strong points. Then give a synopsis of the sequel and either defend its strengths or critique its weaknesses. Choose a film and sequel which you have watched, but you can refresh your memory by reading reviews on a database such as IMDB, ordering them up off of Netflix, and/or watching selected scenes on YouTube. —–Jeff Jackson
You can compare the films discussing any of the elements we have been learning in class from the Power Points. Discuss the success or failure of these elements.
Also look up reviews of both the original film and its sequel or re-make under Supplemental Resources on your Modules page for this class. Find one quote concerning each film. Do not bother with a Works Cited page for this assignment. When you quote someone, just make sure to write not only who you’re quoting but also which publication you got each quote from. Be sure to double space and use an academic font (like Courier New) no larger than 12.
