Use the materials in Project 1 and the answers on the Project 2 quizzes to write a short essay that analyzes the claim, grounds, and alternative points of view of the Project 2 source essay. • Do not critique the essay.

The Context of the Project 2 Essay Assignment:

Your Target Audience: Direct your essay to me, Professor Black, your college writing professor, not a friend or a general audience. I enjoy creativity and depth of thought, so don’t feel you need to write like a robot.

However, remember that part of my job is to assess the quality of your writing so that by the end of the semester I can say whether you should earn credit for ENGL 1302.

Your Purpose + Point of View: I have read Thompson’s essay a number of times, so don’t just tell me what it says.

Instead, write as a student in this class, with the goal of proving that you have studied the materials in Project 1 and studied Thompson’s essay enough to be able to analyze his argument, that is to show me the different parts and how they fit together and whether any parts don’t fit the typical pattern for argumentation.

The Required Format: Write in typical argumentative essay structure, which means to have an introduction that sets up your claim, a body that develops the claim, and a conclusion that wraps up the essay. See the outline below for one way to set up the body. If you need an essay-writing review, see the table of contents in our course.

The Required Topic: Your job is to analyze the parts of Thompson’s argument as defined in Project 1. Be sure to note anything you find unusual or non-typical.

Below is a possible outline for the body of your essay (it’s not required but recommended unless you have a better plan). Don’t forget to create an intro and conclusion, too.

1. Body Section 1 = Claim and Grounds: a. Analyze Thompson’s Claim: i. Tell me the topic + opinion being argued—do this in your own words and try to identify the one or more sentences that lay out the claim in his essay. ii. Tell me what type of claim it is.

iii. Tell me how you decided that x is the claim and how you chose what type it is. b. Analyze Thompson’s Grounds: i. Tell me about Thompson’s reasoning 1. Tell me about the types of reasoning he uses (see the Grounds handout) and analyze what makes them fit into x type. ii. Tell me about Thompson’s evidence 1. Tell me about the types of evidence he uses and how each piece supports his claim iii. Tell me about the relationship between his grounds and the context of the article. The goal is to analyze the factors that causes his reasoning and evidence to match his audience.

2. Body Section 2 = Alternative points of view a. Analyze the alternative points of view in Thompson’s essay i. Tell me where they are and which types of alternative points of view he uses (see the alternative point of view handout). ii. Tell me whether he acknowledges, concedes, or rebuts each alternative point of view
