Transistions Theory by Afaf Meleis
Note: Only primary references may be used in this and all graduate level nursing courses. Magazines, such as Nursing (year), Nursing Made Incredibly Easy, and RN and websites that are not subjected to scientific rigor, such as Wikipedia, are not considered professional literature and may not be used as professional references. Use of secondary references and/or non-professional references will result in a reduction in the grade earned on course assignments when professional references are needed and required. It is important to note that the first editions of publications, such as texts, and primary references are not the same thing. In most cases, first editions are not required though, as noted above, primary references are. Primary references are thoughts, ideas, etc. written by the author whose work you have
accessed; secondary references are thoughts, ideas, etc. of another author and referenced by the author whose work you have accessed within their work.
Paper 5 (Final Course Paper)
This paper is to be 4-5 pages in length (5 pages is the maximum length for this paper and no more than 5 pages will be read/evaluated by the course faculty), excluding the title page, abstract page, and reference page. An abstract (which is an overview of the whole paper, not an introduction to the paper or a summary of the paper) is required for this paper.
This paper must include at least 4 professional, primary references related to the chosen theory that is the focus of the paper, at least two of which must be professional nursing journal or professional nursing text references that are not required journal articles or texts for this course. Additional professional journal references and professional text references are encouraged and should be used as needed to support the discussion in the paper.
Focus of Paper 5 – Analysis, Evaluation, & Application of a Nursing or Interprofessional Theory: Middle Range or Practice Theory
Analyze a middle range or practice level nursing or interprofessional theory (or other pre-approved conceptual model/framework or theory), including a brief overview of the theory; evaluate the theory for its use in your chosen advanced practice nursing role (psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner role); and discuss application of the theory for use in your chosen advanced nursing practice role in diverse populations.
Criteria for Paper 5, with Requirements Specific to Paper 5
10% Introduction – Briefly introduce the focus of the paper.
20% Analysis of the Theory – Analyze the theory, giving a brief overview of the theory, including the philosophical foundation, major concepts, and components of the theory that will be included in your discussion of application of the theory to your chosen advanced nursing practice role in diverse populations.
25% Evaluation of the Theory – Evaluate the applicability of the theory for its use in your chosen advanced nursing practice role by explicitly addressing the following questions, which were adapted by Slusher (2018) from Chinn & Kramer (2015 & 2018), and supporting your evaluations with rationales: 1) Is the philosophical foundation of the theory congruent with your chosen advanced nursing practice role?, 2) Are the goals of the theory and the goals of your chosen advanced nursing practice role congruent?, 3) Is there research evidence to support the usefulness of the theory in your chosen advanced nursing practice role?, and 4) How can application of the theory support your practice within your chosen advanced nursing practice role?
25% Application of the Theory – Discuss how the theory could be applied to a selected problem or issue in your chosen advanced nursing practice role* in diverse populations and propose a solution to the problem or issue based on application of the theory. *Note: Application of the theory must be at the advanced practice nursing level and not at the associate degree or baccalaureate degree level of nursing practice.
10% Summary – Briefly summarize the key points and conclusions from this paper.
10% Format – Consistently use APA format (6th edition) and correct English grammar across the paper, from the title page through the reference list. This paper must adhere to the following guidelines (all of which are in agreement with APA, 6th ed., format), as well as the other guidelines specified in the APA Manual (6th ed.): (a) be typed in a current version of Microsoft Word that can be opened by the course faculty; (b) be typed in Times New Roman typeface, with 12-point font size; (c) have double-spacing between all lines, including the title page and reference list; (d) have 1-1½ inch margins (top, bottom, right, and left); (e) include a title page and reference page; (f) have headings between sections; and (g) have a running head and page numbers. See the NSC 840 Handout-Template for Papers-APA 6th Edition Format posted in the NSC 840 Blackboard Discussion Board.
Grading Rubric for Paper 5
The points for the first five criteria for Paper 5 are based on the level of evidence of critical thinking and synthesis related to the criteria and specific focus of the paper, including clarity, thoroughness, evidence of reading professional literature (as applicable to the criteria). For the sixth criteria (i.e., Format), the points are based on the level of evidence/achievement in terms of the accuracy of the format (APA, 6th edition), including grammar, across the paper.

*Note: Your grade on your papers will be reduced by 10% within each section of the paper each time that a primary reference is needed and is not included in the section of the paper and/or for each secondary reference used within the section of the paper. Again, it is essential that you only include primary references.
