In an article by Steven Lubar and Kathleen Kendrick from the Smithsonian Center for Education and Teaching Studies, the authors suggest five ways to think about artifacts in history.

Artifacts connect people.
Artifacts mean many things.
Artifacts capture moments.
Artifacts reflect changes.
“You can look at any object in any or all of these ways….As you consider the artifacts in this web site—or any artifact in museums, or in your daily life—you can ask similar questions. Think like a curator: use the artifacts to understand, explain, and present history” (Lubar & Kendrick, n.d.).
Using Lubar and Kendrick’s five ways to think about history can improve students’ approaches to thinking about and writing about history. When you see an artifact in your research or textbook, transform the above statements into questions.

What meaning does this artifact have (and can there be more than one)?
What moment does the artist capture with the creation of this artifact?
What change does this artifact reflect?
When students begin to look at history and historical artifacts through the lens of these five questions, especially in relationship to the three questions that most humans seek to answer, it becomes much easier to slip into the mode of a true student of the humanities.
