Evidence-based nursing practice is nursing that integrates the best evidence gained from the most relevant and current studies into the clinical care decision-making process (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019). Research can be weakened due to a lack of ethical consideration. Principles of ethics are intended to guide research and healthcare practice through complex situations that may undermine or negatively impact outcomes. The “Fifteen Ethical Principles of the Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights” (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019, table 23) serve as guides to protect human participants in research studies.
Participant consent is an essential principle in research. Choi, Choi, and Lee (2019) discuss challenges encountered related to informed consent and the consent process. Their study utilized the most current version of the Declaration of Helsinki. According to Choi et al. (2019), this declaration is currently the international standard for medical research involving human subjects. The Helsinki Declaration imparts, “respect for the individual, informed decisions, voluntarism and subject’s welfare” (p. 2), are fundamental principles in clinical research. However, there exists concern that research participants are not truly informed or consenting autonomously due to a lack of understanding study terms and intentions (p. 10).
To ensure consent is protected for human subjects in a research study, it is the ethical responsibility of researchers to provide sufficient dialogue and answer questions before requesting informed consent. Making an informed decision requires the participant to understand the risks and benefits of participation so they may fully engage in the study. Providing proposed participants with written information may improve upon weaknesses that may exist in verbal communication.
