For your final essay, you’ll look for an unexpected or unique connection between any two pieces of writing we read through this semester and analyze that connection in approximately 500 words. This is a very short essay based on things we’ve already read, which means you will need to be very precise in your writing so that you can show thoughtful insights in very few words.

cite all necessary texts in MLA format
additional research is highly recommended but is not required
keep it to approximately 500 words
combine at least two texts we read from class with a focused connection (this is any book, story, or article, or other assignment for the class throughout the whole semester)
you may combine more than two texts as long as you still focus on a specific topic common to all three

This essay, while short, should show me that you have been practicing and can apply the concepts and skills we’ve worked on all semester, and I’ll be grading by looking for those specific things. In particular, you can make sure you’re doing your best work by asking, did you:

use a clear, specific thesis to show your arguable opinion
revise and rewrite to make sure your thoughts are clear
cut all fluff and unnecessary language to get to the interesting bits
show that you took significant time and effort to consider your topic
explain the complexity of your topic
use standard presentation (grammar, spelling, citations, formatting, etc)
consider your audience and purpose thoughtfully
clearly demonstrate the significance (the “so what?”) of your observations
avoid summary; 500 words is not long enough to spend time telling me what is in the texts. Instead …
