Chapter 2: Literature Review (1700 words)
The structure of the literature review will depend on the nature on your topic. Therefore, guidance on the structure can only be very general. However, there are three elements that you need to include.
2.1 Introduction
It is necessary to have a short introduction, where you provide a summary of the main elements of the literature that the review addresses and why. Refer to numbered sections that are provided.
2.2 The main part of the literature review will be a set a set of sections/sub-sections. I would suggest that:
• You present and define key concepts. You will need to decide on what these might be.
• You outline theoretical approaches used to investigate the area and that you will draw upon in your work and why you do this.
• You outline and summarize the main empirical results from the literature. You will compare your research to these in your last chapter.
• You evaluate the literature indicating how your study will improve insight and fill the gap in knowledge.
It is often useful to use a ‘funnel down’ technique in your literature review. This implies that you progressively focus from general to specific and context relevant issues from the literature. To give an example, if you are looking at participation in sport at the university, then you need to discuss definitions of sport and participation, and review the main theories and evidence associated with them, and then focus on the specific context e.g. higher education etc. You should be critical of claims made in your literature review-perhaps as you review ideas, theories and findings-but often it is easier to do this in a separate section, for example, in an evaluation of the literature that helps to establish the need for your research and what it can contribute to our understanding of the area. So, compare and evaluate alternative perspectives or any claims that are made and establish the gap in knowledge that you are addressing.
2.3 Conclusion:
Here review your main findings from the literature and be clear what ideas are carried forward into the design of your study. For example, what gap in knowledge have you identified? How does the literature review establish what is the best practice on how to research such an issue?

• The data collection strategy would be email interviews. I think this could be one the more appropriate methods.
• It is a qualitative questionnaire sent to the participants via email.
• Timor-Leste had the smallest delegation consisting of only 48 athletes who were competing in ten sports in comparison. I will be sending the questionnaires to at least 24 people competing in different sports to find out their experience in regard to the preparation.
