As you read through Eric Rauchway’s Winter War: Hoover, Roosevelt, and the First Clash Over the New Deal, you should pay particular attention to the issue of memory. The history of Herbert Hoover, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and their clashes during the lame duck period in the winter of 1932-1933 illustrates how political narratives are crafted and how they shape both historical memory and political alignments in the long term. This paper requires you to build on the skills you used for the Argument Analysis Assignment. You will need to distill Rauchway’s major argument or arguments, analyze his use of evidence, and make an assessment of how effective he is at making that argument. You must also place the book in the larger context of the class, discussing how Rauchway’s narrative fits within the trends that we have been examining about history, memory, and politics.
