Every paper must explore a concept from the course. Students may explore the concepts of “school violence” or “mass shootings” but since these are very broad categories, it is recommended that they be whittled down to a manageable size. I will help you do this if you make an appointment to see me about your topics.

In addition, students must demonstrate how media or cultural forces shape the concepts and how they are political. This means that students must conduct a political analysis of concepts that are usually de-politicized. To understand how they have been de-politicized student must attend class regularly and read the main course texts that demonstrate just how ideas about youth, gun violence, mass mediated violence, internet violence, political agency or efficacy, political knowledge, ideological content, feminism, constructions political agency, political landscape, technological mediums (formats for delivering content, how transform political reception/action).

Preliminary Paper: This should be the “beginning” of the final paper. It can be the first 4-5 pages and include the paper’s thesis statement, as well as include the competing arguments/theories you will mobilize throughout your paper. It should include a detailed source list in any bibliographic style of the student’s choosing.
